The Jumbuck Street Swag is a portable shelter for a homeless person.
It has been designed to be light weight and weatherproof, providing a measure of
comfort in an uncomfortable circumstance. We are proud of the fact that our product is made entirely in Australia.
Our Jumbuck swags not only give dignity and humanity back to rough sleepers , but in winter they become life savers.
WHATS INSIDE THE SWAG
The Woodford correction facility for men is where the vast majority of our swags are made. Inmates can apply to work in what is called the Industries yards inside the prison. Street Swags has been working exclusively with the Woodford Correctional Facility for over 12 years.
It would be alot cheaper to have our swags made in an Asian or Indian manufacturing plant, however we have chosen a model that supports our fellow Australians. Our model allows inmates the chance to be part of something that they are very much connected to. This is because alot of the inmates at Woodford prison have experienced homelessness or unfortunately will experience homelessness after they leave the correctional facility.
The inmates are always encouraged to contribute their ideas of how to improve the swag and these think tank sessions we have are very rewarding for everyone involved.
Ontop of this well rounded model the inmates also have the opportunity to access Tafe recognized skills and certificates whilst they sew the swags. These skills bolster their ability to reintegrate into society and to seek employment.
It is alot more expensive and time consuming to have our swags made inside the correctional facility but we firmly believe that the benefits this model has for our community and for our Nation as a whole far outstrips having them made offshore.
MADE BY AUSTRALIANS
Each week Street Swags delivers well over 70 swags all across Australia. There is no stock pattern of where our swags go. A box of 10 swags will go to a homeless outreach center in Geelong,a box will go to a front-line organisation like Orange Sky Laundry, a box will be shipped across the nullarbor to Perth where it will be destined for the emergency department of the Royal Peth Hospital, and then we will ship out hundreds to individuals that contact us that immediately require a swag as they are rough sleeping.
Street Swags makes the emergency bedding and we send them to anyone that is homeless or anyone that is helping the homeless.
Each Street Swags cost exactly $67.50 to produce. If you gift a swag you will pay $99 and this $31.5 goes towards buying more canvas, more buckles and more straps.
In one swags there is the following
5 mtr of Canvas = $37.5
One foam matress = $9.5
One inflatable pillow = $3.5
One Hygiene kit = $3.9
One thermal grade Blanket = $ 4
4mtr of strapping = $1.2
9 buckles and clamps = $1.95
1m2 of flyscreen = $3.5
3mtrs of conduit pipe = $4
And approx $4 in thread and needles
Rough Sleeping means that you are sleeping on the streets or you are sleeping in places that are not designed to be slept in. Those that find themselves on the streets, in doorways, or in car parks at night on a basic physiological level need warmth and they need to stay dry. It is critically important especially during the colder periods of the year that rough sleepers have warmth and protection at night. Rough sleepers will present to the Emergency Department of their local hospital very quickly if they have to sleep on cold , wet concrete even after one night. Symptoms like fevers, ear infections, coughs and wheezing can progress very quickly to very serious medical conditions like hypothermia and exposure.
